I noticed some strange noise in the left rear suspension coming from the shock area. Sounds like two wooden logs hitting each other as I drive over irregular surface. I inspected the upper shock mounts from inside the trunk and noticed that the cup at the center of the mount moves up and down a bit producing the noise. On the other side it does not move and there is no noise. I have ordered a new ones from FCP but before I get them I want to understand what went wrong. Does this part fail this way, I mean the cup at the center separating from the rest of the part? What holds them together?
Thanks for any inputs.

Yep, it's broke and yes, it's the way this part fails. The assembly is molded together. You'll see it when you take it apart. You can do it all from the top. Super easy if you have air tools. You may want to crawl under and soak the ends of the two screws that hold the mount in place. They are open to the elements on the underside and tend to get all rusted and crudded up.
