I had the car parked for a day and, this rainy morning, the starter didn't even crank when I turned the key to Position III. The radio works fine so the battery is probably OK. The indicator lights don't even dim when I try to start the car. There is some continuous part-rotating sound when I turn the key to Position II. Is that the fuel pump? I pressed down the gas pedal several times but still couldn't get any crank. I had the break pedal sensor/switch replaced a while ago. Could it malfunction to disable the crank?

Any pointer on where to check? Thanks a lot.

Try wiggling the shifter while turning the key to the crank position. Push forward or pull on the shifter and see if you can find the spot where engine will crank. If this work, then you may need some adjustment on one of the sensors.

Thanks for the advice. I got the car started in the evening without wiggling the shifter. It was a slow crank and, when I hooked up the battery charger, it showed the battery was only 20% charged. It seems I have a beat-up battery so I'll change that first anyway.
