The two hoses circled in green that are just above the turbo - what do they do?

I was replacing vac and turbo lines this past weekend and realized that the those two rubber hoses coming out of the firewall aren't connected to anything. What gives?

heater core.

So the fact that they are disconnected would explain why my car has no heat blink.gif ?

Christ. All I can figure is that core was leaking so someone bypassed it. This is gonna be a fun weekend coming up.

anybody know if the Haynes manual covers heating/cooling? Chilton's doesn't. I need some pics to figure out where the hoses connect to the engine so I can see what's going on.

have those bookmarked already but I appreciate the help smile.gif

looking for where they connect on the engine side, not firewall/heater core. I'll search around some more.

The best way to find where those hoses go to engine block is by jacking the car up and crawling under the engine to see them. That's what I had to do when I replaced all of my radiator hoses. It really sucks replacing those things. Get ready for a Coolant shower, no matter how well you drain stuff.

The top hose is the feed and comes from the end of the block. looks like below the distributor from the picture I'm looking at. The bottom hose connects to the same pipe that the bottom radiator hose connests to a few inches up on a "Y" off the pipe.

I forgot that since my dad has a 1996 T5 I can just check his car. I see where the lines hook up now - gonna need to take out the intake to get easier access to them.

I know almost nothing about heating/cooling systems so forgive me if this a dumb question, but are both of these lines supposed to be carrying coolant? If they are, then something has definitely been plugged off/rerouted and I'll be pissed.

This is correct. The bottom heater hose feeds into the bottom center of the block on the driver's side. It's routed under all your turbo vacuum lines and lower main radiator hose. The top heater hose goes to a coolant "hard" pipe (metal) that run across the back of the motor and feeds several other hoses. Looking at it from the top it basically connects to that "hard" pipe right under the turbo. There is another rubber hose right next to it also feeding off the "hard" pipe that goes to the bottom of the turbo itself. No need to get under the car, but to replace these two heater hoses you will have to remove the airbox and the intake tube.

thanks for the help, gentlemen. Hoses are still good I think so that'll save $60 but it keeps looking more and more like the core is bad mad.gif There goes another $150 . . .

thanks - I'll remember to check out ebay too. I was figuring $130 heater core + O rings + shipping from FCP = ~$150

Just in case you're not there yet; yes the heater core was definetly disconnected by the previous owner most likely to circumvent a leaking heater core.

The good news; it's not a tough fix and it not too expensive for an after market core. There's a good write-up in the "pinned posts" section of this forum.
