Finally! I fixed my transmission's rough shifting problem with about half an hour of work today. I had already flushed the ATF in my car and it was still shifting a bit rough, especially at redline, sometimes accompanied with a 'clunk'. I noticed that the problem had gone away briefly when I replaced the torque bushing on the upper right side of the engine with a urethane one, so it was always in the back of my mind that it was related to some kind of engine or transmission mount. Turns out I was right - I think these worn parts was allowing for the engine to move too much, especially at points in the powerband where you have a lot of torque, resulting in rough shifts.

I ordered PN 8631159 'Engine/Motor Mount; Upper Rear Top Bushing at Firewall' for 20.29 at autohausaz.com, which is the aluminum bracket with a built-in rubber bushing that looks a lot like the OE torque bushing. Take of off the lower plastic cowl panel and remove the wiper arms and lift it off, and there are two 15mm nuts in there that secure it in place - easy to swap out. The photo shows the old part that was allowing way too much flex. Basically, your new urethane torque bushing can be super rigid, but if this part at the other end of the torque rod that bolts up to the firewall is worn/torn, then the assembly as a whole can only be as strong as the weakest link.

I think I've seen this fix mentioned on here a couple of times, but I just wanted to mention it because I think it could help some people out!

You might also want to start looking at some of the other mounts on the car. My car started with the side engine mount going first, then the upper torque rod bushing and then the lower torque arm and finally the front engine mount. They all started to go within months of each other. But I guess thats what time and milage does to rubber.

You can also scrape the old rubber out of that aluminum bracket with a screwdriver, and hammer in some urethane bushings from an autoparts store. Works fantastic, and then you have urethane in both parts. Solid as a rock, although it vibrates a bit.

I noticed Volvo re-designed that bracket, with metal bushings at both ends to re-inforce the really weak rubber stints that normally absorbed most of the energy. Most 850 owners would consider this $20.29 a good investment to cut out on idle vibrations.

i bought a new rear upper torque rod mount from volvo and it was substantially different from the ones pictured. much larger aluminum bracket with a larger solid rubber bushing in the middle vs the small rubber bushing with holes molded into it. it looked a good deal tougher than the ones on my car and pictured at the top of this thread.
i'll try and snap some pictures soon.

best part is it was only 32 bux or something close

I guess it would have been useful to have a side by side shot of the old/new part, huh? The new part is actually a Scantech part but it is revised and looks much beefier. But if the Scantech part craps out early like some of the stuff they make, then I'll look into the urethane route for that bushing. I'm just glad my car shifts smoothly now.
