I just recently tried the alarm on my 98 xc. The alarm horn is very weak, do they go bad a lot? Is there anywya to fix the old one or just get a new one?

yes they do. this normally happens because it sits right above the turbo and over time the heat exposure fries it. they're relatively cheap to get a new one and easy to install.

Before you replace the horn try adjusting the nut on the front of the horn. Over time the vibration of the engine loosens it or moves it around and that will change the sound/strength of the alarm. It's worth a shot since it's free.
