i have a 98 awd with 75k miles. Car ran great until today. Basically after a full throttle run off a turn from a deadstop, and a gear switch from R to D that was a little too fast. Something in my LF broke!!! What the car does now is that the axle spins really hard whenever I back off the gas hard, go up a hill or turn at slow slow speed. It seems to me something near the spline of the axle broke off as it grips if i take it easy, it slips when i am hard on the car. Does that happen a lot, I just want to get everyone's thoughts on it.

THanks

I just pulled the wheel, the axel has no visble damage, but the axle nut has plenty of movement in it. What do you think? Hub, axle or what?

Thanks

Have you recently had the axle nut off?

How do you know its the left front? Can you hear noises from that side? What do you mean by the axle spins really hard? Do you mean the engine revs up but the car does not accelerate?

The nut holding the axle in place should be staked so it would be extremly hard for the nut to loosen off. But
if that is the case you should tighten it and see if it helps

Go into the repair section and look under wheel bearing replacement, you'll see the procedure you need. To remove the LH side axle you'll need to use a bar to pop out the axle which is held in by a clip inside the transaxle.

My guess is you sheared off the axle shaft where it goes into the wheel bearing. You'll know right away when you start taking it apart.

I'm trying hard and for the life of me can't figure out why on earth your axle broke. I mean, that *never* happens. You should actually be thankful thats its something easy and cheap to repair like your axle or wheel hub.

Basically, take apart the wheel assembly. Drop the a-arm, pull the hub and axle and have a look. Its not quick or easy but something definitely let go. I'm guessing stripped splines at the hub end of the axle.

Just hope its not your trans, hope hard.

yep, definitely wanna hope that aint trans. How little is a little to fast?

a friend of mine does that to his busted jerk taurus all the time, throws it in reverse floors it, and puts it in drive to spin the tires like crazy. that cant be good for preserving the integrity of the trans tho..

good luck

it wasnt fast at all, the car was stopped. It's just the stupid Volvo takes a while to go from 3rd gear back to 1st once you stop, thats about it. Its not a tranny problem, you can hear the axles spinning inside the hub.
