I left a friend in my car with it runing while I ran in to an office today. When I came out there was a steady stream of white smoke coming out the exhaust.
It continued as we drove out of the parking lot and for a little while as we drove.
It eventually stopped and didn't return the next time I let it idle but that wasn't for as long as the initial time.
Any idea what it was?
Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah? You might have seen this Vovlo (my wife's) in there. She got the oil changed there when I didn't have time.
Actually, I don't know your boy. I didn't get into the car scene very much. I only lived there for a few years too.

Sounds like you have a head gasket breach. Is the car overheating? Check the coolant level and see how much it is down.
Never accept anything for true which you did not clearly know to be such!

A certain amount of white smoke is normal, especially in cold weather. A by product of burnign gasoline is water vapor, which condenses in the exhaust system especially when it's cold. As the car warms up and the exhaust system heats up it burns away the water which has condensed in the exhaust system, hence the white smoke. If you have antifreeze leaking into a cylinder you will have large amounts of white smoke (enough to surround the whole car and half the parking lot).

Valve seals are what I have seen the most of and an occasional turbocharger.
