I am looking at a car in Davis that needs both airbags replaced. Is this something that is doable or are special tools required?
What is the harm in driving a car with deployed airbags in the meantime?

You can get rebuilt units that can be interchanged rather easily.

To my knowledge, the only special tools that you need are a torx-27 driver.

if it needs new airbags, it probably needs new sensors from a possible collision
not cheap

I didn't think of the sensors. I can get the bags from a recycler for $200 each. I assume sensors are dealer only. What about the airbag covers?

The airbags comes with matching covers. i.e. don't buy a beige airbag if you have a grey interior.

id be a little curious as to how/why the airbags deployed. musta been a nice crash or a serious malfunction both of which i'd want to know about before purchasing the vehicle.

I've decided to bail on the whole thing. To fishy for me. Anyone know of a Turbo wagon for sale in the NorCal area?
