I'll step up for this one but I don't know if I'm helping. I think the codes for that model are all proprietary meaning that they are not universal error codes but ones that only pertain to Volvos. Thus your code reader, if it is the kind you pay $129 for or more at fcpgroton.com, will assign a number to the problem but only a Volvo dealership with its $5000 Snap-on® code reader loaded with Volvo software can plug in and get a number that points exactly to the problem. I connected my Wal-Mart code reader to my V-70 and got back a persistant "P1171" code that I shut off so that I could watch how fast it returned. "P" stands for powertrain, the first "1" stands for engine, the second "1" stands for fuel/air system and the "71" stands for a part. In my case it turned out to be the Mass Air Meter. Shut the check engine light off and note how soon it turns back on and if there is a pattern of its turning on like every time you're on the highway or taking off on the green light. Put the old gas cap on and see what that does. Listen for any differences and use your reader to see if the same problem turns up as ou could be storing other alerts as well. You could have a loose gas cap AND a clogged fuel filter or dying oxygen sensor. I am assuming that you have a code reader since you mention the resetting of the CE light (OBD II) Good luck and I hope this helps

Might check the evap. recirculation valve (located between manifold and purge can via vacuum line). It's a little round valve with a 2 wire plug connected and a hose on each side. These go bad and cause the symptoms you are having. With it removed it should hold vacuum on both sides.

check the gas filler neck, over time it can get dings in it, and the cap won't seal properly, also only use a OEM cap...
