Ever since I bought the car about 6 months ago, it would never fill up all the way. The most fuel I'd be able to put in after the fuel light is on is about 14.5-15 gallons, which would put the fuel guage about a MM or so before the 18gal mark. I'm pretty sure I should be able to fill it up to past the full mark if it were working correctly.
Also, I occasionally smell fuel back there. Underneath the car it seems strongest near the filler neck area. Now I have a feeling I'll need to do exploratory surgery, or prehaps use evap smoke machine at work. But before I do that what's the most likely scenario I'm going to be facing. I dont see any fuel on the ground, nor do I see any staining from fuel residue. I've heard of several things happening that can cause fuel smells.
Any ideas?

One area to check is the top of the fuel pump...its in the trunk under the flooring..they can leak where the wire enters the top of it...also the seal on the neck of the tank to the fuel pump could leak or emmit the odor

There's a recall for the fuel tank that you might want to look into. Also, I've heard of problems with the filler neck too. Do a search on the fuel filler and you'l find some good info and solutions.
