my car started to run like crap yesterday, threw a CEL and was showing signs of a wacky MAF (running rich, exhaust smelled bad, would barely hold idle then surge)

the car is a '94 n/a manual

I read the codes today from A2 and they were 1-1-3 and 2-2-1

can anyone tell me what these codes mean?

after I read these codes I cleared them, started the car and it ran fine!!

took it for a drive and it seemed to run stronger and smoother than it did before the CEL was thrown- can anyone shed any light on this?

thanks,
Patrick

I've been looking around and I think code 1-1-3 means "temporary fuel mixture too weak"

does that mean I had some bad fuel? or is my fuel filter clogged? either way I'm gonna replace the fuel filter and see if that helps out any.

The drive I took after I reset the CEL was a good 20 minutes and quite spirited- I figured if anything was majorly wrong the CEL would've been tripped again unsure.gif

This is what Volvo's system says:

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information 1-1-3

Condition
Short-term fuel trim indicates the amount by which basic programmed injection time must be varied to achieve optimum fuel/air mixture. If the control module finds the engine is running lean, short-term fuel trim increases to extend the injection time and restore the mixture to its ideal ratio. If the engine runs so lean that the short-term fuel trim reaches its maximum (upper limit) and stays there for 3 minutes, the system records diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 1-1-3.
Under certain conditions the ignition coil can generate a pulse which interferes with the operation of the engine control module (ECM) which causes diagnostic trouble code(s) (DTC) 113 and/or 112 to be stored and activates the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

Substitute value
The integrator is set to its central value and adaptation is disabled. When the engine starts, the short-term fuel trim resumes control of the injection time until the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) condition is met once more.
Possible source
- Contact resistance in heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connections.
- defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

Fault symptom[s]
May result high fuel consumption and driveability problems.

DTC information2-2-1

Condition
If the HO2S tells Fenix 5.2 that the fuel/air mixture is too lean, the short-term fuel trim compensates for this by increasing the injection time to keep lambda equal to 1. If the short-term fuel trim mid-position varies from the normal mid-position at part loads, the long-term fuel trim makes up for this. Once part load trim has been enriched nearly up to its maximum (upper limit), DTC 2-2-1 is set.

Substitute value
None.
Possible source
- Low fuel pressure.
- Blocked injectors.
- Air leak.
- Faulty spark plug, spark plug lead or distributor.

Fault symptom[s]
May lead to high fuel consumption and driving problems.

I hope this will help some.

drove it again for a while and it still seems fine?

I cleaned the MAF up a bit and secured the connection-- do you guys think that might've been the root of the problem, or is my problem just waiting to crop up again?
