My tranny fluid is "half crudded" my mechanic says but the fluid isn't burned.. which is good?
Now.. the transmission isn't something i'm that fimilar with but i'm learning.. he said that if we flush it it could kill it becuase that crud is what could be holding the disks in place or not.. flushing could cause them to slip and kill it. Am I right on this stuff?
So anyway.. he said it is a 50/50 shot.. should i? Does anyone know how well 850's respond to a tranny flush (not drain). I don't have any problems with it now but it sure could shift better.

I have a 1995 850 and I get regular trans flushes, my mechanic whos a good buddy of my entire family, he says thats an integral part in keeping the trannys runnin long and healthy.
In your case I don't know, your car is older, and has nearly 2.5x the mileage mine has, and I don't know what the maintenance was like on it. I guess your chances are as he says, 50 / 50. Might wanna start thinkin bout replacin the trans or lookin into another ride.
But figure if transmission grime is whats holding everything together it'll let go and fall apart sooner or later, I say take the chance and flush it. Either the inevitable happens sooner, or your trans gets cleaned out and all is well. Thats my opinion, im sure some of the smarter users on the forum can tell you some more info and their opinions as well.

Crud holding the tranny together may be important, but a modified flush can be done. Empty what comes out of the drain plug. Add the same amount back in, drive several hundred miles and see how your tranny does. If holding up, repeat the procedure. See how things are holding up again and keep repeating. At this point, I wouldn't switch to synthetic, and the above procedure won't be a total flush but it should help, and without the risk of tranny damage from a radical replacement of total fluid. Others have done this with good results.

that crud could also make it's way to the Tranny cooler core and start to cause blockage. You way want to see if you mechanic can flus just the core aswell.

I personally dont buy into the whole "crud holding my tranny together". if you think of the forces that the tranny has to deal with im 100% sure that "crud" wont be capable of holding all that torque on its own.
what i dont think happens with flushes is that "crud" can go on the move and block up the valves etc.
i say dont power flush, but do as mentioned and slowly introduce new fluid into the car using the drain and refill method.

I had the same concerns with you and went the drain-and-refill route. Fluid was very dark brown. After three drain-and refills (3.5 qts each or so) the fluid is bright red and the car seems to shift smoother.
