m56l has different ratios, and is rumored to be weaker then the m56h.
5spd options:m56,m58,m59... good luck finding the last two.
there's the m66 option, but that's a problem inside of itself....

just to throw a wrench into things, i suspect the m56L and H are the same transmissions, with different first and second gears.
via volvo parts program, no matter what final drive the L had, it always had slightly lower first and second gears. it was available in 3.77, 4.0, and 4.45 final drive ratios, but not 4.45 in the states. we only got the 3.77 in 93, 4.0 in 94, and by 95 they all seem to have been M56H, which always had a 4.0 final drive.
the 4.0:1 configuration of the M56L actually had a lower first and second final ratio than the m56H, which is a little pointless since most of our cars will just bake the tires then anyway.
L being weaker is just speculation, possibly from the fact that if you got a turbo manual in 94, it had a H on it.
this is more likely because it didnt need as short of a first and second gear.

search. all the info is on here, though not in one place.
couple notes, pre-98ish Turbo or turboR clutch will fit right onto a NA flywheel and mate up fine with the transmission.
automatic axles will work though they arent as strong as NA manual ones.
to do the swap right you will need a manual ecu (or yours reprogrammed to manual, couple people on here can do it)
the interior trim around the shifter is different as well, though not enough to be a hugeproblem
