I hate frost heaves! Since I teach skiing I often travel a road in Maine full of very deep frost heaves and each week they get worse. Last week I had my right outer tie rod replaced (genuine volvo) and an alignment done. Everything was terrific. Two trips on this road later and my suspension clunks which I'm assuming is my endlinks...I'm holding out for Slater's one way or another.
But, my less sure noise is now when I go slowly over a deep rut, my front suspension makes a drawn out squeel when being compressed. Any ideas for this? I appreciate the help as always.

Suspension itself is original but has been going strong aside from the usual mounts endlinks etc over the years.

i grew up in maine so i know all about frost heaves. but if you want to talk about ruining a car. come down to boston and live here for a year. then you'll be begging to take your car back to the "glass smoothe" roads of maine! lol wink.gif

Yea, you're right that Boston is awful for potholes...so is New York by the way.
I realized that there's a little more to my post than I mentioned although this could be totally unrelated:

At speeds of about 30-35 mph, when I'm not on the gas the car vibrates more than it does at other speeds. I feel it in the steering wheel, shift lever, and my seat. It's not horrendous and I do have snow tires on but I feel like it's only at that speed. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Maybe one of the engine mounts? The one on the top of the engine is known to fail...just a thought.

Its pretty normal for the spring to make noises when re-adjusting, Id have to hear it, but if its not too bad, I wouldnt worry about it.

The vibration sounds bad it could be a cv joint or engine mount , unless its the engine...

You could put the car in park and rev the engine to about 2000 rpm, if it vibrates then its an engine problem (bleh), if it only happens when its moving its probably a cv joint or maybe a drive axle problem, good luck.

Ok guys thanks for the input. I don't think it's the engine as it only vibrates when I'm not on the gas so low rpms only. I thought about engine mounts though I have the IPD poly mount for the top and just replaced the mount behind that one that attaches to the firewall. I'll check some of the lower mounts.
Thanks again.

When you hit the bumps, are you hitting them with one wheel or both wheels? If it's one wheel, maybe it could be the sway bar mounts? Also, I read in the IPD catalog that if you suspect end links you can disconnect them and try to reproduce the noise. If you can't, then you found the culprit.

Just out of curiosity, you're not, by chance, talking about the road that goes over Streaked Mountain from Buckfield toward Sunday River are you?

Just one of many, so probably not. I know Rt 4 and 27 up to either The 'Loaf or Saddleback gets pretty nasty too.
