Hi,
This is my first post on the board. I just purchased a urethane upper torque bushing for my 98 Volvo S70 as the rubber model is torn. I'm relatively young and new to volvo maintenance and wondered if anyone could provide details or forewarnings if you have tried this before.
Do I saw out the old bushing? If so, what tool is prefered? Do I need to support the engine prior to detaching the upper arm? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks for your help.

No need to support anything. As long as the car is not on or moving, the engine isn't going anywhere. Saw it out if need be....get the old out any way you can. My old one on the 850 just fell out (practically). The new poly one goes in easy!

The engine does not need to be supported. The lower mounts hold the engine. The upper mount is just there for support when you're driving so the torque doesn't roll the engine over. Yes the most common method or removal of the old bushing is to saw through the outer rim with a hack saw. Put the blade through the center of the old bushing and reattach it to the hacksaw frame. Be careful not to cut into the mounting piece that will be reused. The new bushing is split so it is easy to reassemble. The hole in the new bushing is somewhat offset on some bushings. I have never heard that there's any special way to install the offset hole. Just line it up where it fits best. Also check the mount at the firewall to see if it has deteriorated as well.

This is a good time to check that. With the old bushing off, grab the arm and torque it a bit. If there is a lot of play, it's time to replace the firewall mount:
Open your hood up, then flip the tabs on both hinges down so the hood stands vertical. Remove the nuts holidng your wiper arms on, then remove the 5 Tor-x screws holding the black plastec cowl on (the big plastic shield just below your windshield). Once that is off, you can see the two nuts holding the rear bracket (attached to the upper engine mount) to the frame of the car. Unscrew them, and remove the entire engine mount assembly. Replace the bracket, and go in reverse from there.
