So, my car is sitting in a Safeway parking lot right now. I have no idea what's going on, but the battery seems to be okay. When I turn the ignition there's this horrible noise, kind of like a loud clicking. When I stop turning the ignition the RPM's shoot all the way up and back down again. The engine never turns over, just a loud clicking that sounds like it's coming from below. Any ideas what it could be?

Are you sure the battery is good?

Could the noise you hear, be the starter solenoid chattering due to voltage drop?

As for the tach, since it's not a mechanical unit, my speculation would be that the electonic tach may do funny stuff when voltage fluctuate alot either in the tack and/or the sensor.

Does your headlight dim when trying to crank?
