Symptoms: Vibration is felt through both footwells, shakes mirror, rattles sunroof, and various panels and sounds like the tail end of exhaust pipe is vibrating also.

Just replaced passenger side engine mount and symptoms are less, but still quite pronounced!
I have had more or less the whole drivetrain replaced about 2 months ago as it was shot.
Car is shifting smoothly
I have had an IPD poly mount for over a year but my car was vibrating all the time due to the drivetrain.

I know the IPD mount does excentuates vibration at idle, but is this excessive in other peoples experiences?

Mech. is suggesting the lower front mount might need to be replaced.
I might try the oem upper mount also?
Any other suggestions?

Cheers!

I'd say it's not normal at all the way it's shaking for you. It seems like a much bigger problem than simply the upper one, since so many of us ran with it totally busted and didn't even realize. I know I did for 3 years before putting the ipd one on. It helped but it was slight. I'd say it's one of your actual mounts like your mech is saying. Easy to check. Just jack up the car or even look around and find the mounts. Should have rubber pieces in a circle in small pieces. Usually, individual pieces break off and eventually there's like one or two small parts of the mount left and it's pretty much metal to metal or just a very unbalanced contact which causes the shaking.

If so not much, but will check when I get home. If I remove the IPD mount and then idle the car, would that process diagnose the if the IPD mount is the culprit?

No, because it would hide a problem with the other mounts. Why do you think your mechanic is wrong?

I don't think he is wrong, he has never seen a poly mount on a volvo, and when I bought my car the OEM mount was mashed. I immediatly replaced it with the IPD mount, so I have no experience with the stock one and he thinks that the poly mount shouldn't vibrate that much. So I guess we are going to replace the lower front mount next and hopefully that will do the trick.

nope.

wink.gif

i beg to differ...the poly IPD uses is a joke so soft absolutely noticeable vibration upon startup/shut down but not nearly the ammount this other user is describing

however after i'de say 20k on it the poly has hardened signifigantly and the vibration has been noticeably less the longer i've had it

your vibration is not from the IPD mount, your wrench has the right idea starting w/ the hydraulic mounts...

I didnt quite have the time to read all the replies... but I had this exact problem with my S70 when I had it. It got progressively worse and after a while even during braking, the brakes would vibrate... your motor mounts are farked, not necessarily the upper one that can be replaced with the IPD replacement, but the other ones.

It was covered under volvo warranty and replaced by volvo when I had the car. Good luck - hopefully whatever you figure is the problem, there is a cheap-er fix than other things I had warranty cover.
