My NA 740 is starting to show its age, and while I can't bear to part with it, I think its time for a second car. I really love 850s and I thinking about a turbo, but I've heard that the turbos are less reliable and won't go the distance like NAs do. Have any of you pushed your turbo to the 200,000 mile mark without any major drivetrain work? Thanks.

they're so cheap these days, a replacement 15G or 16T would be around 250-400 used.

70 series cars are getting uber cheap these days too.

yeah, people make WAY too big of a deal of them.

if you run a good synthetic oil in your engine (as you should) and maintain the car well, keep an eye out for excessive oil buildup on the IC piping, you'll be ok.

Go find a car you like, drive it, take some pictures, and come back and tell us about it...

You should be able to get 200K out of the turbo especially if you opt for the LPT (light pressure turbo) models. Less pressure = increased life but less fun.

With a FWD Brick, the turbo is the least of your worries.

The AC condenser, rear main seal, transmission, head gasket, bent wheels, and any number of other things stand to be more bother than a turbo!

by the way - We have had 4 - 740s, two turbo sedans, and two wagons, and all think that the 850s are worth the bother. The R model especially!

If you have never driven an 850 turbo, you will be blown away by how much faster it is than the 740 wink.gif

BTW, my 95 850 turbo has 215k with the original engine and turbo.

I'd look for each of the above to have been replaced or serviced in the maintenance records, as well as:

ABS/TRACS computer (if so equipped)
Headlight Wiper Motors (again, if so equipped)
Sunroof leaking
Oil pan O-rings (if clicking lifters bothers you)
They all seem to go ~150K mi.

Also...timing belt changes in the B5234T are essential; unlike the non-interference B230F.

Cheers and enjoy.

Make sure the 140K service has been done. That's the big one with the timing belt.

pay attention to the transmission. if it shifts very abruptly or slips at all you are looking at a pretty big cash outlay. pull the tranny dipstick and smell the fluid. if it smells burnt or is very dark in color, it may have issues there as well.

volvo, in their infinite wisdom, didnt spec a service interval for the automatic transmission in these cars, so it's entirely possible for that 150k mile car to be on the original fluid.

aside from that, what everyone else said sounds right.
