So, I've got a 1998 C70 HPT sitting in the driveway here. It's got a wierd little problem, esp. noticable in cold weather. When letting off the gas sometimes, some of the electronics will shut down. Radio tends to shut down too when going off-throttle. Recently swapped the battery to an Optima Redtop, which actually alleviated the symptoms, but it's still happening.
I'm thinking the voltage regulator is the culprit (on the alternator). I have another alternator on standby, but I wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts.
By the way- by electronics, I mean all the electronics. Lights will go, dash will go, ABS/TRACs, radio, the works. The car actually shut itself down completely this AM.

I would say your alternator is dying but if you drove it for a long time your battery should die if the alternator is faulty. But if you've got one you should put it in and see what happens.

If it's the alternator, it's probably shorting out rather than shutting down. I had a nissan truck that the alternator went bad on. I could charge the battery overnight and drive on just the battery for a while (20-30 minutes or so), but then the engine would start to spudder and the lights would go dim, and then the truck would die and not restart. It might be a loose battery cable, or some other main power cable.

I'll try the cables and see if there's any luck with that. The car runs okay (drive a couple hundred miles with this problem), but there does seem to be some temperature dependance (more apt to occur in v. cold weather).

Yeah, I'm not having a good year with these cars.
