Hi there. I'm a long time RWD Volvo driver, but am shopping now for either an 850 or V70 wagon. I've found one locally that I've got some questions about. It's a 1998 V70 XC with 144k miles. Asking $4250.

What should I look out for on this model? how long do the trannys last on these?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I've also found a cherry 93 240 wagon, so I'm trying to decide between the two. The 240 is a known quantity for me, and I'm a bit nervous about the AWD/turbo at this many miles.

Thanks in advance...

one of the major things to worry about with the early XC's was the all wheel drive system. my mom had a problem with hers around 100k and and to replace like the drive shaft and other various parts. costed her around 3500 or 4 thousnad bucks. needless to say i think she got riped off (FYI: i wasnt around and she didnt ask me for advice) but i know it is a common problem with these cars.

On the 70 series, the second timing belt change should be done at 140k, so I would definately check that. Also, make sure that the A/C blows cold or be prepared to spend $1k+ to replace the evaporator core. Other than those issues and possible AWD problems, the 98 XC is a good car.

Thanks for your input. I had heard about the AC issues. Fortunately it will probably warm enough here this week to really check it out. And the AWD tranny worries me a bit-- I really don't care about having AWD, but this one is available, and seems to be a good deal.

One other thing--- the dashboard lights are working intermintantly. the owner has had it checked out, and hasn't been able to resolve it. Is this a common problem? any ideas on cause/fix?

Thanks again.

dude, seriously, if you don't need or want the AWD, stay far away from them. there is so much more to go wrong on those systems, along with some ride quality and some steering complications..and a little MPG too

yeah, that's been my thinking all along, and then this car became a distraction. I think I'll keep looking for a FWD model. Something about the price on this one seems too good to be true.

i would tentatively agree.

the awd on the 01 and up models is a better unit.

Yeah , definatly check the AC. Mine was blowing at 54 degrees on the coldest setting, and I guess its supposed to be around 52, so I brought it in and they replaced the evaporator core. Thank God it was covered under warranty , because the final bill was 1250! Yikes

Hmmmm, between a '98 XC and a '93 240?
It would be a no-brainer for me....a 240 all the way.
