mad.gif My horn stuck on about 6months ago while i was in traffic...and while not pressing the horn. I had heard a clicking noise when making turns for about a week before that each time my wheel passed a certain point.

[attachment=649:attachment]

To my horror i realized today that my contacts look perfect and even after disconnecting the contacts the horns are still on.

[attachment=648:attachment]

The photo with the arrow pointing to it is what i think the problem might be, the plastic sleeve is loose and i can just pull the contact out (laying on the seat) and the tip of it looks worn. Is this normal? Any ideas before i have to tear the whole flacking column down?

Pull the sterring wheel off, there is a contact wheel ,see if there is a piece of something grounding the contact wheel. Sterring wheel comes off after you remove the 19mm bolt..I would love to see a pic of were you mounted the button.

FCP Groton sells a kit with instructions on how to fix this issue. This problem is common in the 850 cars I understand. I know, it was the same with mine.

The first picture you took says it all. On the left and right hand of the airbag well yo will see two bars that are verticle to the steering wheel. There are two small holes in both. One at the top and one at the bottom. There are supposed to be contacts in those holes. They are red plastic insulators with copper or brass contacts in the centre of them. They are missing from your picture. It seems that the horn was jerry rigged from before and that is the way it is now. You should see the red plastic at the top of the hole in the moveable bars. My horns contacts, just one was broken and the rest of them where cracked.

The other pictures show the issue with the contact from the moving part of the steering wheel to the fixed ring that is on the column. Can you rotate the steering wheel and look into the hole that the black contact wire goes through? If so take a look see and see if the fixed ring on the column is chowderd. I don't think you will have to take that appart to fix. Is the brass contact that is on the black wire on your seat rough? ( where it contacts the ring on column ) if not you just may need to replace the spring that is bent and the retainer plastic clip that holds the contact and the spring down.

You can buy the repair kit from FCP Groton and fix that perminantly. You can also buy a kit from IPD. The kit from IPD has a DVD that you can watch and see how it is fixed. It is an easy repair to say the least.

Regards

Dvolvoguy, thanks for your input and identifying what that spring and clip are for me... You are saying that they are to hold down the brass contact against the contact wheel, right?

As far as missing contacts, i don't know if our horns are different, but what you see on those bars you are talking about is just the tiny brads that hold the contacts on, all my contacts and insulators are present and in very good shape...all the guts are between those two bars and you can't see anything from the top

thanks,
aj

You are correct. That is what the wire, brass contact, spring and red insulator do. ( one that goes through the steering wheel base that connects to the fixed ring on the column. Here is the clincher...You can get a new steering wheel, for say.......600 bucks installed... ( what I was told when my horns stuck on the on position) Thats a rip off. Maybe you can go to the jy and get that black wire, spring, red insulator and the black retainer clip for pocket parts?...... ph34r.gif

If you have a volt meter set it to continuity and check all your contacts ( 4 ea ) to see if they connect. ( touch the bar to the centre of the contact ) if they make a connection they are bad. If they are not, just for peace of mind, I would change them out cause they will cause issues later.

laugh.gif , i thought i was the only person that did that, j/k

Now i need someone to tell me how to get the srs light off, i knew it woudl activate, but i had to figure out what was up with the horn after i realized the contacts were good. Anyone know any tricks to get it off? I already let it sit for 14 hours with the battery unhooked...no change
