Well, I got the car ('98 C70 5 speed) and with 65000 miles, I wanted to get all of the maintenance up to tight spec.

I got a goody box from iPD yesterday and started out to change the timing belt this morning. However, looks like very early on, I've hit a hitch -- I do not have a hydraulic tensioner on this. Looks like there is a mechanical tensioner on an eccentric... I looked at iPD's DVD and the Bay 13 write-up and they both address hydraulic tensioners...

What do I do with this mechanical tensioner, does it need to be replaced, or is it reused? ANY help is appreciated, the car's apart in the garage right now... grrrr...

(cross-posted because I don't know if this is an early or late issue...)

Edit: Found it... looks like I've got a late-'98, huh? Nice time to find out!

Late '98 models (Later than March '98 build), came with a '99 white engine and a mechanical tensioner.

The mechanical tensioner is much gentler on the t-belt, thus the interval was increased. The t-belt change interval in '99 and newer is 105K miles, and the tensioner is replaced at the same time.

I would suggest you check the t-belt and if appears to be in great shape, then change it at 90-95k miles and replace the tensioner at the same time.

If you decide to replace the belt now, then change the tensioner also.
