Another Oil Leak

Hello everyone, great site, my name is Mel and I'm from Malden Mass. I just purchased a 1995 850 GLT for my son. This is my first Volvo, but I also own a Saab. Now here's my problem, I found puddles of oil on the top of the motor when replacing the plugs. I inspected and replaced oil fill cap gasket, put a new clamp on the breather hose that appeared to be loose. and cleaned up the oil. A week later I took off the cover to have a look and found more oil, not alot but some. I'm thinking that I may have a problem in the oil trap and or the flame trap. Am I on the right track? Should I automatically replace any parts in that system? I would appreciate any input. Thanks, Mel

Thanks, Would this cause a backup on top like I described? And what about the oil trap? Are any of these parts replaced as routine maintenance?

not as routine maintenance, it's sorta "wait till it breaks" ... and yes, oil deposits on the valve cover would be a sign of a PCV clog on the T5 engine, i'm not 100% about the NA engine tho.

on the NA, the oil trap (PCV system) does vent to under the valve cover, just like the turbo.
On my 96 NA, I've got oil pooling under the valve cover and I know it isn't coming from the filler cap, so I'm assuming it is PCV, since that hose from the trap is extra oily and I know my PCV is all clogged up (I see exhaust from the dipstick; received the PCV parts from fcp this week ...).
Also, some do consider PCV a routine maintenance thing, as a way to help prevent the dreaded rear main seal (RMS) leak. Or rather, "get it just before it breaks" and that way maybe save your RMS from going.

Some have claimed that changing the oil cap gasket or even a replacement oil cap does not seal properly. Evidently the newer caps on the '01 and newer seal better and those who have used these say no more leak there. Still the pcv hoses and oil trap along with flame trap on non-aspirated engines should be cleaned. by the way, as far as the flame trap goes, later model 850's and the S/V/XC70 series did away with them. Many dealers just toss them and do away with them.
