xtc - How often do you check your oil? With our older cars, we check every Saturday, it only tales a couple of minutes to check oil, water, PS and transmission (I do not check the transmission fluid properly, I just check the stick cold - after a couple of months, you get an idea of where it should be, besides, if there is some on the stick, at least you know you have SOME.) We also view the serp belt and look around with a bright flashlight. Of course we do tires every week - unlike most people.
Running your car with the oil at the bottom mark is not good for it.
Was your oil properly up on the stick after the oil change ... one week later?
I have found it to be down as much as 1/4 of the fill mark a week after an oil change. I worried about out 744 TI when it appeared to be using oil every week until I finally took the trouble to make sure that it was completely full after a change. Weekly checks help with this.
You might be surprised how much oil it takes to top up if it is down a bit on the stick.
I only start to worry about oil consumption if it goes over 1 quart every 1000 miles or -
If it fouls plugs and fails emission testing.

The car is a NA so I have no turbo and I don't have any black soot on the tail pipe. The just burns oil, runs fine and I maintain it according to the Volvo maintainance schedule.

My POS '96 burns oil...
the head gasket was replaced, and the valve seals were leaking. Seals were replaced.
The PCV system was replaced, as was the RMS
Now my turbo is puking oil out from the compressor side, and it's getting sucked back in through the intake. I had my intake manifold of last week (to replace the starter) and each cylinder tract was coated in fresh motor oil!
Time to rebuild my turbo!
