I have a 2000 C70 convertible and the cable broke on the passenger side window regulator. I have the regulator out and I don't think it will be too hard to replace the cable, but I am assuming that adjusting it will be a nightmare. I searched all over the web for a repair manual but came up empty handed. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any idea where I can get a manual?

Thanks

The cable is not a manufacturer recommended servicable part. The replacement instructions are looooooooooooooooooong and are not generally in public print. Usually this job is reserved for an advanced Volvo technician and the price of repair is pretty salty.

I just had the drivers side window regulator replaced at the local dealer.....Called several Volvo independents for repair estimates, they didn't want to do the repair.
I paid the dealer $950, $500 for the regulator and the balance is labor.
Before i took the car to the dealer, i removed the door panel to inspect the mechanism. I could not belive that steel cables and plastic pulleys were used to move the window. Looked like volvo had a bunch of morons that designed the abomination.
Good luck

I just learned what you already know. We have a real good independant here and he recommended taking it to the dealer. The window reg is $453.00 Canadian and the labour is 2.7 hours. The cable that broke is relatively easy to replace but Volvo won't sell it by itself. The reason is once it breaks, the timing is off and it has to be reset so the window knows when to stop when going up and down. I agree with you - there must have been some sort of contest at the factory when they came up with this one.

I am beginning to learn that the C70's have a lot of unique things going on. God forbid one of the back windows breaks.

Is there any maintenance recommended for the window regulators? I had this same type of problem with a '90 Audi coupe quattro... a long cable routed around a bunch of stupid plastic pulleys that got brittle and broke -- with no parts available, only the complete regulator at $$$.

I don't think there is any maintenance. It is just 2 cables, similar to what you would find on a mountain bike, and 4 plastic pulleys - one in each corner of the door. They wind on a plastic spool - to wind the window up, one winds up, the other pays out. When you want the window down , the spool reverses direction. The spool is hard to get to and all that helps it is some grease.

My problem was one of flexible armour protection over cables kinked causing one of the actuator cables to pile up. A job with a replacement kit containing the 2 cables and a replacement spool would fall within the realm of a careful handyman's scope. No special tools required, just some common sense and a couple paragraphs of instructions. Maybe a dealer would have to "train" the window to stop when it should.

I just found out today that they don't even supple the window reg anymore. You have to buy the whole cassette which includes virtually everything but the glass. This almost doubles the job to almost $1400.00 Canadian (which is almost on par with US at this time). The good thing is the new assembly has metal pulleys and spool piece.

This is tantamount to admitting an engineering mistake. I already tried to talk some sense to Volvo HQ on the first estimate without success. This new situation is over the top of common sense, and I will try for some help from the mothership again tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

Yikes! The passenger side front on my mom's 96 850 has a bit of a tick sound as it rolls down at maybe the 4-5" down mark. Any ideas if they share the same setup?

Ive done a bunch of them if you take it apart without marking it your done!!!!!

There is a new compensater and bolts with inverted torks on them so the window can be adjusted in the car. The compensater adjusts the foward and back of the cassette.

The first one I did took me 6hrs now about 2hrs the key is marking everything with white out and scribing lines.

GOOD LUCK smile.gif

I called Volvo Canada yesterday morning. I must say they are good listeners but that is about all. I explained that I had already accepted the original situation for about $500.00 in parts and 2.7 hours labour, but thought the news that the part mods increasing the price by $400.00 after the initial quote from the dealer was just plain wrong. I asked that they credit the dealer so they could do the repair for the original quote. They declined and told me it was out of warranty and they have the right to make design changes any time they want.

I had no choice but to tell the dealer to go ahead with the work. I would just have to suck it up. I was to pick it up yesterday but he wanted it until Friday because his local rep was coming it to look at it. He was confident the local rep would make good on the original quote.

So - Volvo Canada does not want to provide service beyond what the book says. Thier logic is that they can't do anything because it is out of warranty. It makes me wonder why they have a customer service number available if they can't think outside the warranty box. My excellent service manager understood the situation and, without my knowledge, pleaded the case to his local rep on my behalf. I was going to ask him to do that when I picked up the car but he did it first. That is just plain good service at the dealer level.

I don't have the car back yet. I will keep you posted.

Doug

I'm not sure but I think your mom's car is different. When mine went there was no indication until it piled up.

Last installment on the saga:

Got the car back today and the window fits and works perfectly. The service manager and head mech got me a 40% reduction in the cost of repair so the job matched the original quote (actually a couple bucks less) but still cost $730.00. I had the car completely inspected and we also replaced a tie rod end, control arm, turbo gasket, tranny service, cabin filter, leaky rad hose to heater, MAF sensor, and battery hold down. They also did a free electronic throttle system software upgrade. It was a good day for the dealer.

I have been around the block a bit and like to think I have learned about people a bit. These guys at this dealer are honest. concientious, up to speed, and particular. I would recommend them.

Anybody in this area - stop at Volvo of Saskatoon. Talk to Bob or Jeff.

no they dont, the 850 has a regulator with slider blocks usually the blocks get dry and cause it to sqeek or tick. or perhaps 1 of the regulator arms is out of the block
