Hi there

'94 850 2.3 T5, 250HP, 415NM

I have a rather annoing problems with my clutch, kinda har to describe, but here goes:

1. sqeaky sound when engaging/disengaging clutch. Its like if I try to engange really slow the engagement proceed in very smal nudges (sqeaky sound) not in one smooth movement.

2. If i engange the clutch really slow, moderate throttle (normal for a soft start, I guess), the clutch shakes (the car) pretty hard. If use more revs I can usually start smoother, but ofcourse not as soft/smooth then.

The clutch doesn't slip at all if I accelerates as hard as I can, so the clutch doesn't seem worn. At least not in that respect.

What is wrong - any ideas???

regards

Martin

I have a '96 R and my clutch does the same thing. It did it when I bought it at 150K kms and still does it at 220K. Seems a bit worse if its cooler and/or raining. Pretty much goes away when it is hot and dry. I also fine that I get no noise if the revs are a bit higher and the shift a bit quicker, i.e. I'm pounding the clutch a bit haevier than normal. Otherwise, the clutch works fine with no hint of judder or slip. I have read in older posts that its a "feature". So I would suggest that if the clutch action is OK, just live with it unless the squeak is getting to you.

My two cents.

when I had my clutch done the dealer they called VCOA and was told either replace the flywheel, or reuse but DO NOT resurface, or the clutch might chatter. - I reaplaced, figured it lasted a good 186k, and its a big enough job I wanted it "like new" when it was done.

Is it possible you had a clutch done and the flywheel was resurfaced causing this problem?

The squeak is pretty common(related to the throwout bearing), and is unlikely to cause any problems, mine squeaked up until 186,000 miles at which point I lost my rear main seal and did the clutch at the same point.

Mine is all original. As one poster described it, its like a wet bicycle brake kind of squeak. Also keep in mind that my clutch and I assume Martin's is a different setup then those used on NA cars. The clutches for the Euro-spec T-5R and R is bigger in diameter, beefier and suppose to be speced to capable of 400HP. That and perhaps the material of the lining may have something to do with it.

The clutch in my wagon does the all the same things you mentioned above. I figured the clutch is on its way out, but after reading this, I guess not.

It's kinda annoying when you have passengers and try to be extra smooth and all you get is that nasty shudder. I had a friend tell me to learn how to drive a stick. I tried to explain that it's the clutch. I've never had it happen on anything else manual trans I've driven. I knew it wasn't my driving though.
