This just starting occuring last week. In the morning on my drive to work, I put the AC on after the car has reached normal operating temperature. The AC is on low (2 or 3 bars) at 72 degress, and it blows hot air for several minutes. If I crank the AC to full blast, hot air is still blowing out. After 4 or 5 minutes, the its starts blowing out cold air.

Is it time to replace some parts, any thoughts? Thanks in advance

I take it that once it blows cold, it's as cold as it should be? Idf so, I assume your major mechanical components (compressor/evaporator, etc) are fine, but something is not telling it to turn on - the thermosat in your car or something.

Thanks for the feedback.

very true, once it gets going, its fine. The hot summer is gone, why is why this is strange because its cold/warm outside in the morning. I never had a prob before just kicking the AC on before last week.

How do I know if I need to replace the thermostat and where is it located? thanks

Maybe it just needs a recharge?? my wife's car (a very soon to be replaced Kia) was doing the same early in the summer and a recharge solved the problem.

Next time you start your car, look at your ac switches and see if they flash.

I don't think that it's a recharge problem.

My car did that. It blew hot for a little bit and then cold. A few weeks later it blew warm randomly and then would go back to cold. Now it blows nothing but warm. Good thing it's nice outside. Now that it only blows warm if I have the AC turned to AUT and have the temp kicked down to 60 and the fan going you can here a click and you see the vacuum go up like it's turning on but then it kicks off and the vacuum goes down.

the AC switches do not flash, everything seems to be working properly on the panel. I rarely use the AC since I like to drive with the windows down, but I started using it because I smelled a foul stench the one time I did use it over the summer. Even when it wasn't on, I noticed the stench since it seemed there is air always coming out even when its turned off. The more often I used the AC, the less the foul stench appeared. Now the stench is gone, but it blows hot when I turn it on.

by the way, what is a recharge? Im new smile.gif

The stench could possibly be coming from a badly fouled or mouldy HEPA cabin air filter. Probably worth while checking it out smile.gif

The stench is proabably mold on your evap core, I recommend spraying lysol down the cowl and changing the pollen filter. The other problem could be something wrong with your damper motors. You can take it to the dealership and they can read the codes in your CCM.

Im not very fond of my local volvo dealership. I'd like to try your suggestion if I knew where the cowl is located. Can you point me in the right direction?

thanks for the feedback, its truly appreciated

a recharge mean it needs R134 or whatever the new name for environmentally freindly Freon that makes the AC system all chilly and stuff.

My had a none working temperature sensor in the ECC which gave a different symptom (no heat until MAX temp setting). There is a heated wire temperature sensor inside that 3 opening slit on the ECC. There is a fan that sucks air flow thru that wire to sense the cabin temp. My fan was jammed with threads.

See "Jammed ECC Temperature Fan spindle" in my website below for full info

http://howards01v70t5.blogspot.com/

Don't know if yours is the same/similar problem. Listening for the fan noise after shut off is a quick diagnostic.

I also hear there is another temperature sensor behind the rear view mirror. Haven't looked at that.

I had a problem on my old 94 where it would only blow cold air for a couple minutes and blow hot.
That turned out to be a bad compressor.
I don't think that the original posters problem though as his trouble is it not cooling fast enough.
I do have a suggestion on the stink though. I have used a product called Evaporator Odor
Control. Comes in a spray can made by FJC airconditioning products. Kills the mold and other
smells. Leaves a nice mild lemon scent. Works real well. I dont know what the price per can
is but if you can't find it local let me know and I'll mail you a can at cost. I have one left. You
spray in into the return air intake. I have one can left I don't mind parting with. I bring all
my paints and stuff in the basement for the winter and the less is better...

Here is a link to the product (I get mine from local autosupply)
