How do you get to the top nut on the strut towers? There is a black rubber disc think on top of it...do I just force it off or is there some other way to get it off? Also do I need a special tool to get the top nut off? Thanks.

when you have the spring compressed, you can just use a peice of brass and a hammer. strike the X shaped nut lefty loosey, and you're good to go.

What do you mean by a piece of brass? On my S70 I needed a tool to hold the strut shaft in place while I loosened the main nut, do I need one of these for this as well?

Hold the shaft with a crescent wrench, and use a brass drift and hammer to remove that cross nut.

Are you talking about the big nut on top that just holds the strut mount in place? It is actually easier to remove ( or at least loosen it) that before you compress the spring.

I think I may have explained my problem wrong. I'm talking about a large rubber disc on the top of the strut shaft (the strut is still installed in the car, I'm looking at this thing under the hood, there is no nut visible, just this large rubber disc that seems to be on pretty tight). The rubber thing...how do I get it off. The strut shaft on my S70 didn't have that thing on it, just a nut. Thanks.

if you are still working on this one...

There's a small plastic cap that covers a nut, use a screwdriver to pry that cover off.

I'll guess you are replacing your strut mount bushings?

At least that's how my 01 s80 was when I replaced the bushings.
