I am a Mercedes owner and I am looking for get a newer vehicle. There is a beautiful S80 T6 for sale around here, however I am getting the impression that this car has many problems and that it will be just another money pit. I have spent much of my time with my 1986 Mercedes, undernieth it. I want something that runs great and is dependable, with that extra luxury feel. Is this car a good buy? Thanks -Joe

Thanks for your opinion, but I am looking for more information on the nature of its problems.

like any car you can get a good one or a bad one. in the 1 1/2 or so i'be only had the starter notor replaced. this car is par or the cousre out the other 4 volvos i've owned with the exception that the 850 which had more electrical problems and is the only car i traded in rather than run it into the group. on the brighter side the 850 wast my first turbo station wagon and i throughtly enjoyed it.

most modern cars have inexplicable eletrical problems, which most mechanics are not as good at.

no disrespect intened myou'll find very few S80 owners here and even less good things to say. i would recommed www.swedespeed.com for ths model.
Thanks
Sky

edit: the date escaped me, i would pick any other year than 1999, if only because of part scarcity smile.gif comng from a Merc i would go for the latest.

I'd say go get yourself a nice BMW 7-series between 98' and 01'. Personally, I'd skip the S80. I've only heard of horror stories.

Or get an S60 T5, its still pretty luxurious. As far as more directly addressing your question, the early S80s are notorious for blowing transmissions.

Thanks for the advice. I do love my Mercedes tho. They have a great fan base and great message boards. I've been working on that car every weekend for a year. 227,000 miles and still kicks jerk. No major problems outsdie of bolt-on things like alternator. But now my heater valve failed, so to fix it I just opened it fully for the winter. Now heat is continuos reguardless if its 70 degrees. But my rear calipers still need to be replaces.

I just want that same luxury feel and driving experience you get with a european car. But even newer Mercedes aren't what they used to be. I've heard bad things about the 7-series BMW too. I want the long life, built tough car, but a little newer. Hard to find these cars at all around michigan anyways. I'm always looking. Thanks again -joe

the S80 has plenty of room for the driver and passengers, i have two kids that fight and it's not like being trapped in a box with banshees. the ride is very comfortable, the stock sound system is fine. there are several versions of the car, if you're not concerned with performance just get the 2.9 N/A they cost less. not sure what the new car line up is like though.

uh did i say http://www.swedespeed.com for informative S80 responses....

But the 2001 is a highly improved car compared to the 99 POS. The 99 S80 is right on par with the 93 850, bad seeds.

This car has the failing ETM. Make sure you understand why and how these fail. I lost all confidence in my 01XC after being stranded 1000 miles from home on a busy highway. See Vexedvolvo before buying a car with the Marelli ETM. The warranty extension on these failing parts is a joke. They are replacing the failing parts with equally failing parts.

I have the EXACT car you described. I wouldn't buy one again. Front end suspension problems, transmission replaced...four times at about 81000 miles. Significant coolant leak right now at the right front, suspect a cracked resevoir. I wouldn't buy one again ( I think I said that already).

I have an 01 and my tranny went out at 99k miles.... Other than a few small things, my car has been trouble free (fingers crossed) for the past 16k miles. No check engine lights, nothing. Very comfortable car, but would probably rec. something else.

never had a peep of trouble with mine (but that's the way they are then kaput!) i push the devil out of it, 99%geartronic, engine breaking. everything except neutral dumps, and J strips. but once it goes it's off to levelten for the works. we'll see what happens. fun's fun.
