For the 90th time, the Volvo fluid is NOT synthetic. It's a myth created by word of mouth in response to the high selling cost of the fluid. The Volvo Fluid is Mobil 3309 just rebadged by Volvo.
No where on the Volvo fluid bottle is the fluid called "synthetic" there is NO literature anywhere from Volvo or anywhere saying the Volvo fluid is Synthetic.
The cars call for JWS3309 oil specification which is Mobil 3309 at one-forth the cost. I get this from Volvo technicians all the time on different forums calling it "synthetic" and implying it's different and superior to Mobil 3309. I challenge anyone to prove it's synthetic. No one ever has. Read the bottle. It's NOT.
It's only a rumor and a bad one. Actually who is to say a "synthetic" fluid is superior anyway. In a lot of transmissions synthetic may prove too slippery.
Just use Mobil 3309 and don't look back. Let the others believe it's different but save yourself money and don't buy into the "synthetic" myth.

The AW5 normal 5-speed auto is OK with 3309 - is the Geartronic 5-speed OK with it too?
Thanks!

Alfredo, Alfredo : either you are a very slow learner, or just being a smart azz.
Let's clarify and do a search to verify this.
All AW transmissions (read 5 speed automatics) use , and that is The Volvo rip off trans fluid which is NOT synthetic. OR, you can use the same fluid Mobil 3309 which is [size=4]NOT synthetic. (car examples are the S40, S60 and S80 after 02 automatic 5 speed transmissions).
4 speed tranny like the 99 through 01 S80's which used a Cadillac GM trans use Dextron III which is also NOT synthetic.

Totally wrong. READ and learn.
Mobil 3309 and Volvo dealer trans fluids to JWS 3309 oil spec are okay for ALL 5 speed Aisin Warner Trans like those on S60's 40's and some 80's. The fluid is not synthetic nor are they different. They are made by Mobil and rebadged by Volvo. There is not one shread of evidence that AW requires a Special Volvo fluid. Even later model 05 06 and 07 Volvo's don't even call out the Volvo part number for the fluid. Owners manual says to use JWS approved oil for the trans to JWS 3309 oil spec. End of story. Do not spread misinformation on this. I am amazed how this can be misunderstood.

Don't worry dmelviØØ7 delected his post claiming it was synthetic anyway Ignore that obviously.
You are correct it IS NOT synthetic nor is it special. It's Mobil 3309 and that is to JWS 3309 oil spec. Moderators should sticky proper transmission requirements to avoid misinformation and confusion that the different models and transmissions and oils can bring.
