I recently bought a 2000 Volvo S40. It had 60000 miles on it.

After I test drove, I came to know of two issues it had.
One SRS air bag light and knocking sound on driver side on rough road.

The owner told me that the car was not used in last 2 months due to his oversees work trip and the battery was discharged, due to that SRS light and it just had to be reset.

Can some one advise me on how to reset SRS air bag light?

I am planning to visit dealer for that, If I couldn't figure out how to do it.

I wish I could find a good independent imports mechanic instead of a dealer to save some money.

If any one knows one in Philly or New Jersey area I greatley appreciate that.

Thanks in advance.

I recently bought the same car. You need to visit the dealer to reset the SRS light. Some charge $80 to do it, though it costs next to nothing. Try to find somebody who won't rip you off.

Mine makes a clunk in the front when turning right only. I have not figured it out yet, but I am getting the idea that 2000 S40 are known for suspension issues.

'99 C70 LPT convertible - nautic blue/tan - all stock - 42,000 miles.
'00 S40 1.8t - summer green/gray leather - 97,000 miles.

Bad news if the light is on all the time that means it has a permanant fault which means something most likly needs replacing.

I have seen the side impacts go out a few times on those cars, not a good sign.

You need the codes to speculate on the SRS light. The knocking sound from the front is probably the strut tower/spring seat. This can be updated to the newer part with a kit from Volvo on the 2000 and 2001 cars. You should replace both sides because the ride height is slightly altered. After you see the old part, compared to the new, you will want to replace both.
