Hey guys,

I've had my 2001 C70 "44,000 miles" for a month or so and I have a brand new porblem. 5 or 6 days ago I turned the key and it wouldn't turn over. It's not the starter, that sounds good. I turn the key back for a minute i'll try again and it starts up fine. There is no consistency to whats going on. I turn my car on 5 or 6 times a day and 30% of the time it does this. It been doing this the last 5-6 days. The engine can be cold or hot, it doesn't matter. Its happened on flat surface and on hills. One or two time the car actually revved up like it was going to stay on and then it shut down.

I have a date with a Volvo specialist next tuesday but I dont want to get stranded in the mean time and i'd like to go in there with some input on the problem so I dont get hosed...

I have a 2001 and I JUST had to get my battery replaced like a month ago. Not saying its your problem, but you might need one in the near future. I also had a wierd problem with dead starts, where it would start then stall. That seems to have corrected itself somehow. Wierd.

Hmmm. Ignition switch? It would be inconsistent and could produce these results, right?

If this is the problem, I feel a lot better. I know these cars are known for electrical issues so I started to worry right away... I'll tell you how it went after Tuesday. I need to get the regular service check done anyway so i'm going in regardless. Also, it sounds like people here are always looking for good places to to take their car. I'm going to Peters Auto Works in Tigard, OR and they are Volvo specialists and they have all the Volvo tools and a DYNO. I'll tell you what I think about them after my first visit. I hear they like to mod there.

"it wouldn't turn over."

that is NOT an antenna ring, and again there is no software associated with replacing an antenna ring anyways!

on to the real problem, ive seen alot of times corrosion on the small wire going to the starter causing this, or possibly an ignition switch.

maybe I used "not turning over" incorrectly. It tried to start, the battery is good and starter sounds fine. I could hold the key forward and it would try but it just wouldn't fire up. Like I said, it has also fired up 2 or 3 times but died right after too.

I'll have to double check on the software but the new v50's and s40's get software with a new antenna ring and those symptoms are very similiar to the diagnosis of this.

ok...if it didnt start, but turned over, im wrong. more than likely it is your antenna ring, although it could be other things also...

and yes, the 04.5+ S40/V50 need programming, but that is because its not just a transmitter, its a control module/ignition switch.
