my 99 V70XC has a leak by the filter case: the oil drips on the bottom of the plastic filter cover and across the bottom of the motor not alot, but persistent.
I changed the oil and after seeing the leak did take the filter off to check everything and be sure the o-ring was there.
one little thing I did was drive 4 miles with the fill cap off, but not much oil came out and I was able to wipe it off and clean everything.
Any ideas about what is causing the leak? I did check to be sure the filter was tight.

did you knick the gasket mating surface in the process maybe?

Did you crack the oil filter canister? Could also be coming from above. Clean it and then trace it later.

Could it be residual left over from the oil? Or it could be your front seals leaking

it was just from the change: i've just never seen so much! I had my wife drive the car so I wouldn't worry about it.
the bottom of the motor is still oily but no more drips and the level is fine after 400 miles.

Souns like residual, that is why I spray them down with brake clean after I get them all sealed up.

Make sure you don't have more than one seal on that canister for the filter. Also, make sure you oil the O-ring for the canister if you replace it just to give it a better seal.
