RE: a 2002 S80 T6. I did a search to find out how to cancel the "service soon" message on the message screen. All previous posts say to depress the odometer button while starting the engine, it will then reset (or something to that effect) I tried every combination of those instructions to turn off that message - nothing works. Can this only be reset with the scan tool?

2. I replaced one of the small (5 watt I think) lightbulbs in the headlight cluster. The message still says something about that particular light being burnt out. I forget the exact wording. How do you turn THAT message off too?

Thanks in advance.

Service light reset

1. Turn ignition switch to position I.
2. Press and hold "day counter reset button".
3. Turn ignition to position II.
4. Continue holding day counter for about 10 seconds.
5. After SRL flashes, release day counter button.
6. Should hear "beep-beep" to confirm command accepted.

OK, this reset thing is NOT working. The 2002 S80 T6 has a digital message on the left side of the instrument cluster reading "Time For Regular Service". It's not the amber "check engine" light. I turned the key to position I, depressed the trip odometer reset button, held that button down continuosly, then turned the key to position II - still holding the reset button, and nothing happened. No hazard lights flashed, no chirping sounds from the car to indicate the reset - nothing. I tried holding the button down in position II continuously for a full minute - nothing. Are you sure you're not supposed to leave the driver's door open while doing this, like on MBs when you reset this same light? I'm following these directions to the letter, as provided by the link in this thread, it's not working. Spare me the wisea$$ answers please.

Reprinting the same instructions doesn't help much. It has now become a question of clarity of definitions. You're using "day counter reset" while other posters on this site use the term "trip odometer reset" - you can see the confusion starting. What is the "day counter reset"? A few other contributors have written that it's the trip odometer reset button. The only other button on the cluster is to the right, and that is the clock adjustment... is that what you mean by "day counter reset"? The owner's manual refers to that button on the right as the "clock adjustment". I think everyone's confused. If it's the push button on the left side of the cluster, please state so. If it's the push button on the right side of the cluster, please state so. I'm getting really frustrated with this.

So if the trip odometer reset and the "day counter" are the same, why isn't this resetting? Read my earlier paragraph. I've followed the instructions to the letter.

Okay...trouble is that you are turning the key and then depressing the trip odo button. Push the button, and while it's being pushed turn the key...see if this helps. Sort of like getting into setup screen on some computers.

Btw, your light bulb message won't go away until you get a light bulb that works.

I could have sworn I even tried that method too. I tried every combination I could think of, although I will try that again. I probably am turning the key AND THEN depressing the button - just as the instructions have stated. Obviously if your method does work, then those instructions are wrong. It would be nice if someone wrote explicit instructions (since this is a VERY specific task, step-by-step) about how to do this, rather than a lot of guess work and cryptic instructions. No one responded to the open door/closed door issue that is used with MBs. I guess with Volvos it doesn't matter if the driver's door is opened or closed while doing this. Funny thing is everyone thinks they know how to do this, yet the instructions don't work...

Okay, let's start from the beginning...here's what I have down:
Service Light Reset ('02-):
- Ignition to position I
- Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
- Ignition to position II within 2 seconds.
- Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original value has been reset.
On some models a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button is released.
- Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds (if not, it won't reset).
The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded.
- If the trip meter is already reset, the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10
seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.

THANK YOU. Your instructions are the most thorough yet. YOUR instructions should be posted at the beginning of the forum. Read your instructions, then read the other ones (push button, turn key, lights flash, you're done). No wonder it wasn't working for me, I wasn't releasing it after four-seconds - because the previous half-a$$ instructions didn't tell me to. I wish people would collect their thoughts and then write instructions clearly, succinctly as you did. This procedure is so detail-specific that there's no room for error. Sadly, people don't think before they write. It's like diarrhea of the mouth, except it's on a keyboard.

Well, anyway, I'm glad it worked for you. I should have read the instructions written before too before making some other suggestion. I just figured they got if from the same place I did and that they worked. It wasn't until I found mine that I realized that mine was a wee bit different.
