This is elementary, but there is no reference in the Volvo owners manual (03 S80, non-turbo) on how to properly check the trans fluid. Should it be done with the engine running, in park, or engine off? Thanks.

Check it with engine running after at least 15 minutes after starting the car....run through each of the gears for 5-10 seconds each, with brake on and put in park...pull the dipstick and check on the hot side.

Thanks much. I just did a trans flush (53k, Mobil 1 syn) and wanted to top off, but was leery of doing it wrong because Volvo does things differently sometimes. FYI, on the S80, it's the BOTTOM trans line that needs to be removed to flush. I discovered this after first removing the top line, starting the car, and pumping about 1.5 quarts all over the engine and my driveway. Thanks again.
