This is my first posting to Volvospeed. I searched for an answer but finding none, hope someone can help me.

I just bought a 1999 V70 R AWD with 100,000 miles. The car seems to be in great shape. It seems to have been well maintained... I have the book with dealer stamps and a pile of receipts.

One problem that troubles me: I can't get the windshield to defrost properly. I put the control straight up on defrost, close all of the front panel vents, and crank the blower full speed. Tons of air blows out, but the windshield never really clears. I drove 30 minutes to the office today and when I arrived, there was still mist around the perimeter of the windshield.

It gets worse if I crank up the heat. Then the misting increases.

In addition, as soon as I turn up the heat, I get a foul nasty smell in the car.

What is going on, and how can I fix it?

thanks in advance

yup, it's in the pinned topics, in this forum.

in the meantime, leave the temp control on the coldest setting, then turn on the AC, that'll make it better.

Thank you -

I went to Maintenance and found two pinned topics about the Heater Core:
Heater Core Replacement and Observations - 850 Series and Heater Core Replacement - S70 Series

I imagine the S70 is the one to follow for my V70 -- correct?

I really appreciate your help.

I have been reading all of the posts (including that great pinned thread) on replacing the heater core in a V70. One more question - Should I change out the heater hoses at the same time? In the photos it looks like the hoses going to the core are metal. I would think at least the O rings should be changed out. What are your thoughts about what should be done while I have the heater core out of the vehicle?

If I changed the hoses, where do the other ends go? Is there a connector at the interior side of the firewall, or do they feed through a hole and then disappear into the great unreachable void?

thanks in advance.

All Right! I just successfully changed out my heater core. The pinned instructions were very helpful. Here's a few things to add to them: 1) expect a bunch of coolant to come out of those hoses when you disconnect them. Fortunately, I had a nice big trash bag with no holes in it. 2) To get o-rings you need to order the kit for the hoses 3) be patient putting it back together, the fit is tight.

Also, my carpets were not wet, discovered this is because my carpet has a nice thick plastic backing and the floor is also coated... so there was a nice puddle in there that I had to vacume out.

This was very successful. Thank you all for your help.

Check your cabin filter. If it's clogged badly the defrost won't work very efficiently.

One week later of typical midwestern autumn weather, the heater and defroster work perfectly. I picked the right time to do this. We've had very hard rain, frost in the morning, and times of high humidity... the defroster got a workout and performed very well.

Thanks again to everyone, and to the archives.

My first post resulted in my first major repair on this car... now I am starting to undertake all of Stage 0. It is really confusing what is different between 1999 V70s and older models. It is a learning curve. Glad you guys are here to help.

Joe, how long was yours leaking? You might want to inspect the carpet padding..
