I bought front and rear brake pads from a dealership and want to go to an independent volvo mechanic. What can I expect to be charged for the labor to change the pads and flush the break fluid? I don't want to be gouged.

I"m in the LA area, specifically in the sf valley... I also wouldn't mind a referral to a good volvo shop in my area.

thanks. OH I have an '05 S60 2.5T

Pads labor should be 1 hour. How many miles on the car? Volvo doesn't recommed a brake flush until 37.5k miles.

I have 43K miles. So it would be an hour total of work? or more because of the brake fluid flush?

Pads are so easy to do yourself. Just need someone to help you pump the brake pedal. May as well flush system at same time. Really easy to do yourself. You don't even need a powerbleeder, just do gravity bleed or bleed each line with fresh fluid and do the master cylinder.

Nilsson's in Canoga Park was $40 for a brake flush but that was 5 years ago so its probably higher now. They are a Volvo Indy. 818-346-3666

An indy will probably charge you around $300 -$400, a dealer probably $400-$500. This is for pads and fluid flush.

The dealer will likely recommend new rotors as well whcih will tack another $250 to the price tag. Don't know if you really need those, but it is SOP for volvo dealers to replace pads and rotors at the same time. Most owners can typically go through two pads without changing rotors (unless you have rotor warping or pulsing issues).

Thanks for all the advice... So clarify the amount of labor time that will go into this job, cause I'm down to negotiate an hour rate with these guys, I just need to know how long it takes to do the job for arguments sake.

I usually don't wear my vag-badge, but I should say that I'm a girl who's 4'9" and the idea of changing my brake pads myself has no appeal. But saving the money does.

Thanks guys.

And I do not want to go to a dealer cause I don't want an official record of my mileage... y'all can figure why.

Why dont you just contact one of the Socal guys? Just wear the vag-badge as you call it once more and they'd prolly be willing to change your brakes for you. Free!

Dude, I don't know what dealership you go to but no one should be selling you rotors unless they are at or below spec. A 37.5k service at my dealership runs about $275 that includes brake bleed, air filter, oil change, tire rotation and full inspection. Front pads run about $162 and you only get rotors if needed.

Leg works, or any other skin for that matter. There are plenty of people who are there who should be willing to help.

Lol. $162 for front pads??? That sounds outrageous.

Good luck getting your brakes don. I would help you out with it but I am too far away. There should be some people on here who would be willing to help, skin or no skin.
