I just bought a v40, 99 1.8i
and everytime i turn the engine on, there is a really loud clicking sound, which repetedly goes on and on
for about 30 seconds.
It is located near the passenger side dash speaker, where the climate sensor and the alarm light is.
It goes on longer if the air recirculation button is not on, and if you turn it off, it continues clicking!
does anyone have any suggestions or know what is wrong.
Thanks.
Lewis.

I'm not sure about the V40,but in the 70 series the mechanism to change the system from recirculate to fresh air is located behind the glove compartment. The arm that is responsible for switching the system is known to break or become disconnected from the rod that is the other half of the mechanism, and is an easy fix by pulling out the glove box and reattaching the arm.Mine has fallen off twice since I've owned the car,tho it's never made any noise.Just no recirculation mode.
Hopefully that's a start for you.

If it is clicking it is the motor. You will have to replace the REC motor. If the arm falls off it just goes end to end without a noise if it clicks that means a gear inside the actuator is stripped. Replace it!

Hi,
Can you elaborate on where to look for this "arm"? There's been something making a rattling noise in my V70, and it appears to be coming from some area under the dash in the glove compartment area. I'm wondering if perhaps this is the culprit.
Thanks!

Very interseting, mine seems to do it too i think, would someone elaborate on the glovebox removal and where the rod is

I'm pretty sure it's the arm that I've circled in the diagram below but I really don't want to get in there unless others can confirm this. The actual module to the left of it that controls the vent fan recirculation can be pried off from this armature gently with a screwdriver, but don't know if that's necessary either. Just wanting to see if anyone else can confirm is I have the right location and if what I'm thinking is correct before I jump in. Mine makes the sound but eventually seems to "click in" and work correctly....so maybe the arm is in the process of falling off? [attachment=1208:attachment]

Hi,
I'll have to wait until it's daylight outside to check for myself, but removing the glove-box is pretty easy if you want to check for yourself. You just have to remove about a half-dozen Torx screws lining the top and bottom of the glove-box. All the screw heads are visible and accessible if you open the glove-compartment door.
I've been driving around for a month with my glove-box out, trying to figure out what's making the rattling noise. I hope that this is it!

That diagram is kinda tough to decipher, but you're in the right area. It's not a difficult job tho.Just pull out the glovebox as described above, real simple, and behind it you will see a white plastic arm that is real obvious if it has fallen off the one end. It's just be hanging there.Real simple once you look at it.

Thanks...I guess it keeps falling off. Is there anyway to put it on so it doesn't fall off again?

Doesn't appear so without drilling the rod and putting a pin in it or something, and space is a little limited.Since it's only a 10 minute fix I've resigned myself to fixing it once in a while, and concentrated on bigger issues.
