guys,

probably 1 in every 20 times, I start the car it starts and then cuts out after about 5 secs. I then restart it and its fine?

Any ideas pf where to start looking?

2001 v70 t5 auto, 100,000 miles, RICA, everything seems in good condition.

Sounds like MAF problem. Should throw a code though I believe. I had this happen on my car a few months ago.

That wouldn't be the immobiliser, the immobiliser cuts out the starter, becuase if i hold my other cars keys near the ignition, it will say start prevented, and the enginge will just not crank, id push more towards the MAF.

thanx guys,

checked pinned threads and removed and cleaned connector as described this weekend.

no other errors, codes or warning lights ever came up and everything always worked OK once it had been restarted.

big refurb cominig up prior to the next mods. Think replacing the MAF is a good idea on a preventitive level.

OK for last few days so fingers crossed.

You sure the car runs for 5 seconds? Could be starter also. Does the car actually complete startup?

Yes starts fine first turn and instantly as it always did.

Sequence below:

turn key
engine turns over and fires
initially revs to apprx 1500rpm for about 1 sec then settles down to 1100rpm
idles at 1100rpm for about 5-10 secs then just cuts out.
restart and everything the same and its fine.

first few times i thought it was when i touched the brake to release the gear inhibitor but since it has happened sat dead still in parking space, no steering, brakes, lights, stereo etc.

Looks like a garage visit and bill looming.

i am planning a full service and replacing most ancillary parts (hoses, plugs, leads etc) prior to the next load of mods, is it worth changing plugs, leads, MAF etc before the garage or let them look first and see what they think?

Cheesed me off because it happened again on the way home.

Still sounds like MAF to me. My car did the same thing. May throw a code though my car did not!
