I'm looking for info as far as "best/worst" years for AWD wagons. I know there are serveral issues around 99-01 for certain models. I'm trying to stay in 02-03 range, simply due to milage, however, if a 00 or 01 catches my eye, is there any reason to keep looking?

I had to register my basement as an NFA item.

I'm really interested in another R, but an XC isn't out of the question as it'll just be a stock daily car, nothing exciting. I was looking at what your site had the other night, as it so happens. Some decent stuff out there. smile.gif
Maybe I'll drive my trade-in up to the NW. laugh.gif

Thanks for the tips.

I just had the viscous drive coupling replaced on my 2000 V70AWD. Trust me, it was expensive and it was not a good time to be had by all. I doubt I will own an AWD again. Ask yourself, "Would I be better off getting a FWD wagon and buying a LSD and having it installed rather than a AWD model?" My new answer to that question is a resounding yes to the FWD and LSD (Limited Slip Differential). I also own an Explorer that has been trouble free which begs the question about why one works and the other does not. 98 to 2000 at least uses the viscous drive which is very sensitive to varying tire circumferences. That means that you can just about never use the space saver spare. You must use a roll back hauler when being towed. You must religiously (no atheists in this crowd) monitor tire wear. Any aberrations in tire wear necessitates a replacement of ALL 4 tires. The computer governing the AWD function monitors relative speeds of the 4 tires. If it computes relative differences in speeds it supplies power to the other areas. The varying circumferences would put abnormal speeds on one tire and blow out the coupling. If you find an exceptional low mileage 99-2000 AWD buy an extended warranty. Don't leave home without it. My problem stemmed from using the space saver too much. A situation occured that was unavoidable and for the want of a nail, a horse was lost, for the want of a horse ... you get the picture.

K.. the AWD system on 2001 + cars is different than that on 98-00 AWD. I don't see anything wrong with say the AWD system on the 98-00, just gotta know what you're getting into, and that you have to pay extra attention to its workings.

Boy, about all I see up here (for late Volvos) are in fact the 2.4T AWDs. They're all over the place. My wife's friend bought one for $17k a couple months ago.

Really? I've only seen like 4 or five at the dealership. XC's seem to be the only car I work on.
