I'm going to be upgrading to Bilstein HDs soon. I know that spring seats need to be changed, but I've heard suggestion re: strut mounts. Do they or do they not need to be changed on an 03 S80, with about 55k? I'll be changing the strut mount bolts and nuts too. Anything else that I need to change? Do the rear shock mounts need changing? Thanks.

Never worked on an S80 but here's my experience:
'97 850 with 75k mi needed new strut mount bushings bad(spring seats). The mounts/bearings were ok.
'99 S70 with 104k mi needed new mounts/bearings worse than the bushings. Ended up replacing both while I was that far in.
The mounts might be ok with that many years/milage, but remember you'll be taking the whole thing apart again if they fail. New struts would probably put extra pressure on them.
Strut mount bushings = $20ea. Strut Mounts/bearings/plate = $50ea. Remember you'll have to replace all the bolts/nuts later if you have to go back. Decide if its worth the ~$80 savings to you.

Replace the spring seats and call it done! As stated the new shocks will cause an earlier failure.

I've replaced my Bilsteins HDs after being bounced around for 4 years....the ride got so harsh...wife would not get in the car.
Installed the Foni FSDs with 52k on the clock...surprised to see both spring seats were bad...rubber separates from the metal collar.

Yeah, I almost said the same thing (but didn't want to get into which shocks are the best argument).
Had them on the rear of my 850, and the wife basically said "never again." There's a reason the BMW got new Koni's on all 4 corners and not HDs despite the extra cost. Didn't even have to plead my case on that one.

OK, I get it, although I've heard Bilsteins are "the best," too. I'm not interested in doing the cut-a-strut thing. What's the consensus, then for strut/shock replacement? KYB's? Monroe? Another sport-type strut Im not aware of?

Koni Yellows are the best macpherson shock that i've seen for Volvo's.

Since I'm not planning on using lowering springs, is there any other difference?
actually the FSD's are one sale from ipd right now.

Thanks for the link. Should the rear mounts be changed too?

not sure the idiosynchrasies with the S80, but the front mounts usually are the only ones that seem to go bad with any frequency.
