I have a '02 S40 1.9T with 5 spd auto with ~65K miles. I had the TCM / software update done that was realeased in Jan 2005 and made a big difference. It initially took care of the shift "Flare" and abruptness. However, now something seems not right now.
Not sure if this is a transmission problem or what. Recently the drive train seems like there is a lot of slop. My first thought was motor mounts but I think they look ok. When I accelerate it feels like there is a delay (kinda like excesive gear lash) and abruptly starts to go. The kick down seems to have excessive delay then is very abrupt and seems to happen a little too easily. Sometime the engine revs high between up-shifts. Other times seems sluggish shifting. The tranny brain seems to have gone schizo on me.
Any ideas?

sounds to me like your pnp switch (neutral safety switch) is going bad. I had similar symptoms before mine finally set off a check engine light and a blinking arrow. Replaced it last week and the car drives like new again.

All that from a PNP switch? I never would have guessed that one. Guess I don't understand how it factors into the control loop. How do you check it?
