So blacking out your headlights isnt as hard as everyone thinks. If this mod is something your interested in, its VERY simple. Im sure there are many different ways to do this, however this is how I did mine. When I did them a few months ago, I did not take pics...so these pics are everything, except doing the actual painting.

Before:

After:

All you need is:

1) Black high temp paint
2) Q-Tips or small paint brush
3) Rubbing alcohol
4) A bowl to spray the paint into, so you can dip the Q-Tips
5) Socket wrench with 10mm socket
6) Flat head screwdriver
7) A beer

Ok so lets start.

Step 1: Take flathead screw driver...and push down tab on the back of the corner marker, it might be a bit tricky...but push the tab down and pull the corner towards you slowly.

Step 2: Pull the corner marker out

Step 3:Turn bulb holder/wiring to disconnect the bulb from the Corner

Step 4: Un-screw the 3 bolts attaching headlight housing to the frame

Step 5: Pop off both light covers (one unscrews, and the other snaps right off)

Step 6: After unscrewing light covers, disconnect the headlight bulb...and remove whole headlight from the car

Step 7:After removing headlight, locate the 7 tabs on all ends of the headlight (2 ontop, 1 on each side, and 3 on the bottom)

Step 8: Use flathead screwdriver to remove clips. I found it easier to pull up on the back part of the tab, pulling it up/toward me

Step 9:Pry glass lense from the housing...and using the Q-tips, use rubbing alcohol to clean the areas you want to paint black. Let the RA dry, and begin to apply coats of black paint using either a small brush or Q-tips like i did. The final outcome should look something like this when its finished being painted. From there, just go backwards with the steps you just did, you are all done!

A couple extra pics....

Any questions...feel free to shoot me a PM.

Thanks. Added to the resource page.

Corners. I still recommend a light coating of VHT Niteshades to make the corners match a bit better. On a silver or white car, it works to leave them clear, but any other color would benefit with a light tinting.

Im glad everyone liked the write up!

And exexpat, I might try to find a way to open my corners up eventually and do the same process. But im not too sure on it yet, I kind of like the way the silver looks on my car.

Thanks for pinning it in the resource page, thats awesome. Maybe we will see alot more modded headlights since its not a difficult task at all

the corner lights would probally have to be broken open, then glued/corked back on. But it'd be nice for the write-up of the VHT, and how to properly do it.

Yea, unfortunatly...i tried that whole process one time...and had to order a new corner. I might try my handy work with the dremel sometime, but for now. Im happy with my lights.

Its very tempting. How do you think it would look on an 850? They have different style bezels than the 70's right?

Nope, I wanted to...but it would be very expensive if you mess up. Some 40 series have them like that already, search and find some pics...they are nice!

Thats how i did it...but i took the entire essemly off...its easier.

It doesnt affect your reflection for light at all. The ribbed areas that you are painting, are in no use for reflecting the light. Its just the main reflectors around the light itself. Ribbed areas are ok to paint.

Car is still in storage...I really wanna get another jewel headlight tho to match. Then I need to figure out how to customize the turn signals to match. I have to buy some paint, then i'll try it...

Hey, a mod that even works for S90's tongue.gif

Seriously, it was pretty simple. And the design is more like the jewel headlight posted below, where the bezel comes off from around the main reflector. So I painted that black and did the small flat parts between the two headlight reflectors. Now it has a more "seperated" look, and the light cuts off on the lens a little sharper (don't know about on the road yet, I just finished one side and it's still daylight). Also gave me a chance to get rid of the non-working headlight wiper and brackets associated with it.

Anyway, here's some pictures, and I can give steps to anyone with an S90/960 that would want to do this. Well worth the $4 spent on a can of spray paint.

Before, notice the chrome bezel seperate from the main reflector:

After, with the barely noticeable line between the high/low reflectors painted to match:

Picture with the lens reinstalled:

1997 S90, 202,000+ miles.

If my picture doesn't show the wheels, no one can make fun of the ridiculous wheel gap.
