My mom's 2001 V70 2.4t has been having some serious problems lately, it does this thing where is will be driving normally, then it feels like something switches or changes and the car will go into limp mode along with flashing the "diminished performance" light and the little warning triangle. When you try to drive it in limp mode it won't go over 15 mph and the engine hesitates as if it was a manual-transmission car about to stall.
It's at the dealer right now and they say that the flame trap system is clogged, which I have no problem believing given my mom's grasp of auto maintenance, but they want to replace the whole flame trap/PCV system for $1000.
They also mention that the MAF "may need replacing", and my hunch is that the maf is what's actually causing the problems and they just want to make money on the other bit.
Is my hunch right or wrong?

Electronic Throttle Module. up untill I think 1999 or 1998 volvos had a wire that opened and shut the throttle... ETM is a KNOWN issue with P2 and late model P1s

Yep, I told my dad about the PCV stuff, and I first thought it was the throttle. I'll tell him to push for the throttle to be replaced as well as the MAF if it's actually throwing MAF codes.
