What controls what ohms an amp or speaker runs at. I am looking at amps and most have ratings for 2 or 4 ohms. So is that determined by what the speaker draws or is it determined by what you set them amp to? I am a bit confused.

It is determined by the speakers or subs you are connecting it to. If the amp has ratings for 2 and 4 ohms usually the 2 ohm has a bit more power. Most standard subs are 4ohms. Connect 2 of them in parrellel, (hooking both positives to the positive on the amp and both negatives to the negative on the amp would give you 2 ohms (it divides in parrallel, and adds in series (series is where you hook the positive on one sub to the positive on the amp and the negative on the other sub to the amp and connect the negative of the first sub to the positive of the other sub) with 2 4ohm subs in series would give you 8ohms. Confusing? yes of course at first tongue.gif

Speakers will sometimes run 8ohm and I've seen some run 6ohm in home audio stuff.

speakers can run just about anything, but typically car audio speakers run at 4 ohms. Then you also get into dual voice coils. Like my IDQ's are dual 2 ohm, so the one speaker has two seperate 2ohm coils that have to be wired to either one or 4 ohms tongue.gif

I know this topic is about a 3 weeks old, but here is a site that helps determine impedence. Wiring Help It has helped me many times.
