It seems like my wood staining skills still need a lot of work. This exquisitely horrendous hand rubbed finish, exudes oodles of that rustic Je Ne Sais Quoi, which I will refer to as being, "very charming". :)

what is your desired result?

stain is best applied with a sponge brush, clear should be rubbed down with steel wool between coats to maintain smooth finish

I was hoping for a more uniform color. I used a sponge applicator then wiped off the excess. But the stain came off in patches, you can actually see the brush strokes...it looks really awful in bright lighting.

yeah thats kind of odd, sounds like maybe contaminants on the wood

my latest project has been a vintage wooden ladder (taking advantage of tall ceilings)

I guess I should've used a "wood conditioner" first? Had sanded it down pretty evenly too. Oh well, I'll do that next time I refinish it. If people ask I'll say it's a unique hand rubbed finish to obtain a desired "antique look". lol.
