wat

nice find!

I think dedicating your undivided attention to an album is WAY understated.

but I'd rather just get the full albums.

that's why i at least get the full album (or artist's discography) and not break it up... and put it all on a USB stick for my car.

I think that has more to do with "I know I like this song, i'll probably like the other songs" -- for me at least.

even if i got my hands on a real album, i'm still gonna rip it and not use the disc.

But see what's the fun in that. It used to be, music was an event! So it's nice to get nostalgic about it now and then and set time aside to listen to a great album on a nice stereo. This is why I've started collecting vinyl again. Is it convenient and great to have all of it on my computer/iPhone? Absolutely! Maybe this is my love affair with music talking, but I think dedicating your undivided attention to an album is WAY understated.

Ignoring audiophile beliefs about vinyl, unless you're going for remembering the days of actually dropping the needle on, what's the difference between clicking play and sitting down on the couch and actively listening to the album, or putting a record on? For it to be an 'event', you don't need it to be a period-correct re-enactment. I wasn't advocating surfing pron while putting on some background music. It's just a fancier version of a 500-disc changer. Buuuut you can also enjoy your music any time you want while you surf VS with similar sound quality. I actually feel like so many people being stuck listening to music through their shitty laptop or basic desktop speakers has ruined their perceived enjoyment from listening to music, compared to back when everyone had massive towers. His point about quality digital audio is a pretty important issue though. And if he wants to index all his CD's on his computer, he should use a lossless encoding.

You obviously don't get it. It is fundamentally different. Plugging an iPhone in and clicking play is no where near the same as even listening to a CD and sitting in the same chair. The difference being, I can open up the cd case, pull out the vinyl jacket, etc and further engulf myself in the moment by reading the lyrics as they're being sung. It's right there in front of me versus me having to google them and have a thousand pop up ads ruin the experience on some stupid lyric site. It's a different experience all together. Not to mention the joys of watching the record spin, and the whole mechanics of player itself.

Absolutely. Shooting film vs digital is a TOTALLY different experience. Every click of the shutter with film is money out of your pocket..

Oh we can talk about bit rates and lossless vs. analog all day, but that wasn't my point. Like Greg said, there's something completely different about popping in a great album and just not doing anything; looking at the sleeve or watching the record spin.

Your company is throwing something away... You pull it out of the garbage and sell it. Are you being unethical?

I look at it this way...

1. your recycling

2. It was unethical for them not to ask if anyone wanted it..

3. Fuck em.... do they pay you enough.... NO

Simple as 1,2,3...

On another note...
