So Ive been getting a misfire that only happens for the first few (5-10) minutes upon starting the car then it goes away. Check engine light flashes.... engine really rough.... Always shows code for cylinder 1 . Changed all spark plugs (was bout time anyway), changed the coil pack for cylinder 1 (initial code was for the coil pack), used some injector cleaner.... each time i did one of the above the problem went away for 2-3 days.

so far these codes have come up
DTC P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
DTC P0351 Ignition Coil 1 Control Circuit

Now its back yet again and I'm also getting a strange faint smell on the outside of the car. Kinda like a rotten egg/o2 sensor smell but not really strong enough. Can only smell it a bit for like 1-2 secs after car is turned off. Any ideas guys?? Its gettin really annoying

If its misfiring you should do the obvious. plugs, cap, rotor. Wire are also very important. I was having a misfiring problem with my car for the longest and finally changed the plug wires. car stopped misfiring. Its easy for the wires to arc at high RPM if they are old. Try doing a complete tuneup. And that smell i believe is the cat going bad, not the 02.

umm yeah as i stated in the post spark plugs were changed and the car is a 01 c70 with direct coilpacks per cylinder so there goes the whole wires/cap..... did u read the post d00d?

I had the same problem, engine stumble at first start. I ignored it until it did it all the time. I discovered the problem coil by removing each coil until the stumble didn't change=location of bad coil.

It appears that you've done everything correct so far so I'll guess that its a different coil. I know the code said #1 but my car didn' throw any codes so I'm suspicious. Also, you can inspect each coil and look for cracks, the bad coil I took out had a crack in the side of it.

I think its a bad coil and the computer got it wrong.

More than likely you have a bad coil. If you remove the coil and pull down the rubber boot, you can see hairline cracks in the plastic portion of the coil. If you want to verfiy it is the coil, number all the coils with white paint on the top, and swap the coils from #1 to #5. If the misfire moves to #5 then you have found your bad coil.

I noticed you said you just replaced the coil. Did you use an OEM volvo coil? OEM spark plugs used?

If swapping coils dosen't work, try swapping injectors from #1 to #5 and see if the misfire moves.

Thanks, guys one of the first times ive ever gotten advice that was actually helpful. gonna switch around the coils to see if the comp just got it wrong or something. also will try same with injectors if problem persists. will update soon : )

Agreed
But especially agree in asking did you use OEM stuff as these things can be very fussy to aftermarket stuff sometimes

yeah it was oem volvo stuff. thing is i replaced the coil, it was fine, then it came back after a few days so i gave them back the coil and got a new one and same story. so i switched the coils now after talking to u guys and it started happening again. gonna pull the code tomorrow and hopefully it will be a diff cyl and that'll show me its actually a different coil. or ill start on the injectors.

on a side note when i called up my local dealer my friend at the parts shop wasn't in and i ended up with some retard on the phone who quoted me $265 for 1 injector. i told him i didn't have time for idiots and hung up. my friend gets me cost price on parts anyway : )

its late to hell with proper typing..............

The rotten egg smell is the excess sulfur being lit off in the cat....either due to an ignition miss or an excess of fueling (sticking injector or control issue). I received an equally absurd quote for an injector for my '99 T5, still looking for a signifigantly better price.

YOu may want to run a compression test before buying an injector?
