Nice! Serge, I've been quoted rebuild kits at auto parts store. I think Carquest has one for $12-$15 that includes everything you need.

Can I digg that write up ?

Wait a while. I will add a digg button probably the day after Christmas. Getting an article to the front page on a weekend makes baby Pyrrhus cry.

Rebuilding the calipers use to be part of the "premium" brake job when i worked at midas. Pads, turn rotors, replace caliper hardware and seals and flush brake fluid(or rebuild wheel cylinders, replace shoes, hardware and turn drums)

Absolutely great way to save some $$! Especially if you have a p1 R, where the caliper bracket is different than other models that share the same caliper. When I had my front brakes rebuilt, the rebuilt units I got back were the the ones with the smaller caliper bracket, lots of money and time wasted going back and forth until finally just having my old calipers rebuilt and given back to me. If you chose to send yours out KING KALIPER does do a fantastic job for reasonable cash.

FYI rebuilt caliper is usually 50-70 dollars. Rebuild kit is 10-15. Job takes 30 minutes tops. You will spend more time packing them up to ship the cores back. For multi-piston calipers you just block in the pistons you do not want to remove and work your way around.

You could hook up a used master cyl to it and push it out with brake fluid. Get a cheap compressor, everyone needs one. If you really do not want to, go to a bike shop and buy a C02 inflation system.

Same for all calipers, except wilwood. They don't have dust boots LOL

One question, never did a rebuild myself. I bought exchange calipers..

Can't you insert the dust cover before inserting the cup?

You can insert it on the piston but not in the caliper groove. But getting it on the piston is not the hard part so I do not bother

No, a wheelless wrecker sitting in the mud for several years probably at a wreck yard.

Another way is to unbolt the caliper but leave the line connected, then lightly depress the brake pedal until the piston(s) come out. You should still use a piece of wood in between, especially for fixed calipers. Once the pistons are out, disconnect the line and proceed with the rebuild.
