It has been a lazy last 2 months. Didn't do much with the current cars.
Removed the panhard bar from the 142 last month to change the bushings but it turned out the bushings didn't fit. Added to that the original bushings didn't look all that bad so after derusting and painting I put the bar back last week.
Drove the car around the industrial area near my house a bit, car still isn't registered. After that I went to a place our company bought last month to take some pictures,

It is a 14700 square meter property with a 10000 square meter production/warehouse building which had been abandoned for the last two years. It's next to my house with only one neighbor in between.
It used to be a textile printing factory but all the printing equipment was ripped out so the floor in the production area is one big mess. Makes nice pictures though.
There is also a workshop and since most of the building won't be used for the coming months I have the opportunity to use this workshop space for at least the coming 4-5 months. Means the Opel Blitz, the SDM and the 142 can be stored in a dry and heated place during the winter. Last pic above is the workshop area.
Have been busy with some other cars. Future SD plans. I bought the 142 because it was very cheap and free of road tax because it is an oldtimer. I was also curious about these types of cars. The body isn't in a very good shape. There isn't much rust anymore, most has been repaired already, but the sheet metal is out of shape. The more I was working on the car the more I kept thinking that transplanting a 5 cylinder in this car wasn't a good idea. Added to that the old B20 does have it's charms. Every time when I open the hood it simply tells me the B20 belongs in this engine bay. For this reason I sort of decided to abandon the 5 cylinder transplant plans. I also looked at other engine options, the so called red block options, and I simply can't get around the fact that I find these types of engine's to be butt ugly on the eye. No aftermarket plenums and big turbo's can change that. The only type of red block which looks slightly attractive is the 16V version but even then it means I will be stuck with a 4 cylinder and I had my share of 4 cylinders with the C30 and don't want to go there again. I like 5 cylinders and want to keep it that way. Added to that I always liked the 240 series cars better.. The 142 is nice as it is.
So the plans changed..Again.. Went hunting for other options last month and found a couple... Part of the deal was a parts car and I didn't own it for long... Arriving home with the car on the trailer both my sons came checking out what the fuzz was all about. My oldest son is 14 years of age now and as of November 1 this year some laws in my country for getting a driver license have changed. The age for getting a license used to be 18 years. It basically still is but now the kids are allowed to start taking theoretical exams at the age of 16.5 and take practice exams at the age of 17 after which they are allowed to drive a car but only with an experienced co driver present in the car who has had a driver license for at least 5 years. This until the day they turn 18. My son also started technical education this year and will be working with metal machining and welding equipment and the way it looks now the boy has golden hands so I thought it would be nice opportunity to start working on a car, his own car... So.. before the car was unloaded from the trailer I had already given it away..
The car in question is a '78 244 2.1 K-Jet,

Paint is terrible. Rear fenders are gone and probably some floor panels but it will give my son a chance to work on the car and hopefully have it in a road approval kind of state before he receives his driver license.
Car has been designated SD-Jr.

I agree with you on the decision not to update the 142 w/a newer engine. Makes some sense if you are doing a full-blown revamp of the whole car, but otherwise keeping it essentially original seems like a good plan.
My son's 1st Volvo ('98 V70XC) also required him to learn how to perform a transmission replacement & general servicing. It can't hurt for any youth to have these skills, if they have the inclination.

Went hunting for other options last month and found a couple... Part of the deal was a parts car
And the other part of the deal was an abandoned project car...

The Swededemon anniversary project... SD10
But wait, it isn't white.
Brought the car to the painter and received it back just before X-mas,

A '77 242 with a B21A engine and a manual 4 speed gearbox.
Before paint some modifications were made. Sunroof was welded shut. Holes of the chrome strip mounts were welded. Front and rear Fenders rolled,

Although most will be modified over time the suspension already was in nice restored shape,

Sandblasted and repainted some parts already,

Also some engine parts, engine will go in for the time being .

Started putting back together the huge puzzle of parts which came with the car in boxes and bags.
And today the windshield way glued in. Chose to use a 91+ windshield , no chrome strips.

And the rear window was put back in place,

For now most of the parts which came with the car will go back on and register it. Want to put late style bumpers on the car and if possible '75 front bezels and grill.
Car will be lowered, 17x8 and 17x9 rims are on order. Engine mods are still a bit open but 5 cylinder has prefs.

It will be nice to see a N block in this thing. looks like it weighs no more than 1200 kilos lol, should be interestingly fast.

Damn it, the tails are different, just noticed.
It will be nice to see a N block in this thing. looks like it weighs no more than 1200 kilos lol, should be interestingly fast.
Front is different also. Group A has square lights.
Maybe it will look like a Group A in the far distance (Bramoco '87 Donnington 500..) but that isn't my intention. Also no trunk spoiler.
Most important is registration at the moment. I want the car to be road legal so I can drive. I bought SD9 last year because it was cheap and to get a bit familiar with the older models. Thing is that there isn't straight body panel on the car. It needed some attention at the rear arches and I was afraid I would run from one thing in to the other. I didn't feel the car was really worth it plus I always liked the 242 better.. . Ill keep the SD9 and maybe at some point will take a look at it.
The 242 was offered like this,

The 244 came with it as a parts car but it was still untouched. The previous owner bought it to transfer the 4 speed plus overdrive gearbox and driveshaft.
After checking the 242 it tuned out there was hardly any rust except at the rear arches but this had already been repaired. Welding was OK but not very flush. Everything was still in primer, no bondo, so the repairs were clearly visible.
Made a nice deal with the paint/body shop to fix some glitches plus the mods mentioned in the earlier post and paint the outside and engine bay. While at it they also painted the trunk and half the interior.
At least I know the state of the car now and it makes a good base for future modifications. Interior will be minimal so not to much work.
Maybe a 5 cylinder will go in at some point but I became a bit hesitant. Although I still have done a lot with my cars last year, for instance the Opel Blitz rebuild, I never really had the time and frankly also no really the urge to do the thing I wanted to do with the cars. Didn't drive one single lap at the Nürburgring last year. Didn't drive at a track with SDM, only as a passenger when Emiel took SDM to the track. SD7 is still in no shape to drive, didn't touch it for months.
For now the plans are to make SD10 road legal with whatever propels the car, make SD7 run hopefully before April this year but I already have the feeling I won't manage. The Blitz needs a repair also.
If SD10 turns out to do OK I will take it to the Ring and drive one lap at the least. That is the one commitment I'll make for this year.

The way it appears now the clutch is almost gone and the compression is so so.
It gave me a chance to take a lot of measurements for a future engine transplant.
Maybe I'll try and make the engine run on the bench.
Received lowering springs today to get a bit of a head start on the stance of the car. IPD sway bars will arrive in a couple of weeks.
Today finally the heating is up and running again. No more freezing temperatures in the new workshop. Windows were wrapped with transparent "smoke glass",
